I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am so excited to be a part of the Childcare Network family!
My name is Katrina Williams-Downing and I started working in the Early Childhood Education field in 1994 as a Teacher Assistant with the Infant Program. In 1995 I started the continuity of care and stayed with my infants until they turned 3 years old. This opportunity allowed me to work in all programs within the Early Childhood field. I hold an Associate Degree in ECE, a BA in Human Resource, and I am working towards obtaining a Masters in Education Administration.
I have lived and worked in the Triangle for 16 years. What I love about the town is the diversity, and how you get the opportunity to meet so many people from different cultures and backgrounds.
I have four young adults; 2 boys and 2 girls. I also have 2 Grandchildren; a boy and a girl. My two boys attended the Childcare Network afterschool program. They enjoyed having other friends to play with and having fun things to do. I loved the experience because it gave my boys a safe place to be afterschool and they received assistance with their homework which was a huge help.
Since I was 12 years old I knew I wanted to work with children. I loved babysitting and I started working in the church’s Sunday school program. But it really hit me when I was trying to decide what I wanted to study in school. I tried Accounting, Business, Law and nothing gave me the satisfaction like working in Early Childhood Education. That was the moment I really knew I wanted to work with children.
As the school director, I want to enhance all the great things that are already taking place. I want to take us to the next level, to help make the school better and better. I also want there to be a partnership between the staff, families and children.
My goal is to help our children become life-long learners before they go off to kindergarten. It’s not only important for them to be able to recite their ABC’s or 123’s or read a book but I want them to have good communication skills, understand empathy, respect themselves and others, to love reading and writing, and have the ability to explore math, science and technology and love it.
I love working with the STEM or STEAM program, I enjoy creating environments around STEM/STEAM, I feel that it should be a part of a child’s daily experience. I enjoy using nature to create things and bring nature in the classrooms. I am experienced and training in the Reggio Emelia Approach. I have created and designed several Art Studios. Please do not wait for formal conferences to discuss any concerns you have with me. My door is always open!
